Cyberpunk 2077 is a single-player action role-playing game released on December 10, 2020, after a development period of 8 to 9 years. The game was highly anticipated – CD Projekt Red announced that it received 8 million game pre-orders, 74% of which (approximately 5.9 million) were digital. Furthermore, 59% of the pre-orders were on PC, helping Cyberpunk 2077 break the world record for the fastest-selling PC game, beating World of Warcraft Shadowlands’ 3.7 million sales record just a week after. Upon release, critics and gamers alike praised Cyberpunk 2077’s storyline, setting, and graphics, but heavily criticized its poor optimization and deemed it unfinished and unpolished.

Gameplay
Players primarily experience Cyberpunk 2077 from the first-person viewpoint. They also juggle between multiple options, branching dialogue narrative, and exploration of the open world in first or third-person view. The world is populated by NPCs, who have unique movement routines, change behavior based on the day-and-night cycle and weather effects, and are vulnerable to a vehicular collision. The game’s protagonist, named V, is a mercenary, whose gender, appearance, voice, background (lifepath), clothing, and custom body modifications are customizable. Furthermore, its Stats (Intelligence, Body, Technical, Cool, and Reflexes) depend on the class chosen at the start – NetRunner, Solo, or Techie.
Body modifications are called “cyberware implants”, and, as part of the mission, are bought and upgraded via a person called a “ripperdoc”. Besides cyberware, and although melee combat exists, conflicts are solved via ranged weapons named Power, Smart, and Tech, all of which can be further upgraded or modified. Combat is also aided by bullet time, a skill akin to that in Max Payne, a Rockstar Games franchise, and controlled via law enforcement personnel, vehicles, and drones. V can also inspect objects, use soft drinks to replenish health, and participate in mini-games such as shooting ranges, boxing, hacking, martial arts, and auto racing.
Another key in-game mechanic revolves around “Braindance” a mechanical device that allows V to live through other people’s experiences. The players also collect experience points by accepting main quests from NPCs known as Fixers and use them to increase V’s stats. Side-quests provide a reputation boost and can unlock vendors, skills, and new locations.
Setting
The primary setting of Cyberpunk 2077 is a corporations-controlled megacity named Night City. This open-world metropolis is located in the Free State of North California and consists of 6 different regions. The corporate layer of society inhabits the City Centre while Westbrook is a high-end neighborhood. Heywood is a suburban part of town, immigrants inhabit Watson, and gang members overrun Pacifica. Finally, the working class is lives in Santo Domingo, the industrial region of the city. The city relies on robotics for everyday tasks required to keep it running, while all of the layers of society, including homeless people, take advantage of cybernetic body modifications.
The city’s diversity is also evident from the existence of transgender NPCs, as well as NPCs who do not speak English, and whose words must be translated using special language implants. Every resident can openly carry firearms, and the Night City’s policing force, named Psycho Squad, regulates its use. The city also has a Trauma Team, a rapid medical response squad that uses helicopters instead of ATVs, helping players and NPCs alike. Players can also explore the area outside of Night City, named Badlands, on foot or in vehicles.
