Like many well-known Rockstar Games, Red Dead Redemption 2 is an action-adventure game. It was released in October 2018, as a single-player containing an amazingly detailed but long storyline. In November of that year, a month and 1 day later, Rockstar Games published a multi-player version as an independent game based on the same game files, titled Red Dead Online. There was so much hype around the game that it was the most pre-ordered game for PlayStation 4 in history. At release, Red Dead Redemption 2 took the title of having the largest opening weekend for any game in history, amassing $725 million in revenue. Also, within the first 2 days, the game sold 6.23 million copies in retail and close to 4 million digital copies. Up to this date, the game also received over 250 perfect scores and won over 175 Game of the Year Awards.

Gameplay
Red Dead Redemption 2 starts in 1899 and ends, after a time jump and two epilogues, in 1907. For more details, read our answer to, “when does Red Dead Redemption 2 take place?“. The game is set during the Wild West era and can be played as both first-person and third-person shooters. It follows the protagonist, outlaw Arthur Morgan, a member of the gang called Van der Linde. Simultaneously chased by federal agents and bounty hunters, Arthur is forced to flee across five made-up United States states. During the two aforementioned epilogues, players also take the reins of the previous game’s protagonist, John Marston.
Storyline
The majority of the main storyline, which is linear and with set objectives, is tied to criminal activities such as robbing banks and train, maiming, dueling in public places, and murder. However, as the main storyline progresses, some good deeds are strewn about. Arthur not only starts doubting his convictions and the loyalty of his fellow gang members but also gets a terminal illness diagnosis – tuberculosis. Outside of the main storyline, players have freedom of movement and exploration. They can choose to complete quests the way they want to, and at their own place.
Game mechanics
With the game set in the Wild West, horse-riding is unsurprisingly a big part of it. Players can either tame or steal a horse, and feed, clean, and bond it with while keeping it saddled or stabled. As for combat, players can shoot on foot or from the horse. They can also use firearms, explosives, throwables, and melee attacks. New additions compared to the previous game include the ability to dual-wield weapons, use a bow, and swim.
Dynamic progression and honor system
Every choice a player makes affects the course of the game and can lead to a different ending. That includes multiple chat options, and the ability to accept delay or decline missions. Another thing that triggers a dynamic NPC response is the Honor system. Terrible deeds will raise the rank, making you wanted by law enforcement and bounty hunters alike. Such events also affect witnesses. They will run to the nearest station whether players commit a crime or simply show up, and a quick decision must be made whether to eliminate them. Morally positive choices such as following the law, helping others, and letting the NPCs live can pay off by getting special benefits such as store discounts or help. Additionally, players with a low Honor rank loot more items from corpses and get special outfits.
FAQ
Different strokes for different folks, as they say. The game has a gorgeous and diverse open-world filled to the brim with things to do and see. The game doesn’t force you into linear progression, and NPCs are scripted top-notch and feel and act like living and breathing entities. You will get attached to some of them, no doubt. The downsides? Lack of fast travels, controls that are initially hard to get used to, and a very tedious and tiresome first chapter.
